Facebook group monitoring: how it works
Facebook group monitoring means regularly reading public posts and comments visible to a signed-out visitor, then matching them to keywords or buying intent. LeadScanner uses no Facebook account, does not read private groups, and does not collect contact details.

How Facebook group monitoring works technically
A scan starts like an ordinary visit by a signed-out person. It handles the cookie consent notice first, then opens a public group or page. We do not sign in to a customer account or our own account, use a browser extension, or get around a login wall. If Facebook does not show content to a signed-out visitor, LeadScanner does not read it.
Facebook groups default to “popular” order rather than “newest.” A scan therefore asks for chronological order so recent posts are not skipped. In a September 2026 measurement, one page load showed about ten posts; earlier measurements showed about four. Comments under the posts Facebook shows in that view are read too. Those are measurements, not a promise of a fixed number of posts per load.
What Facebook lets you monitor and what it does not
Facebook’s own notifications are not a precise monitoring tool. They are broad or absent, and keyword alerts are available only to group administrators. Since 2024, there has been no API for reading group content on which ordinary sales monitoring can rely. A monitoring tool can therefore work only with what a signed-out visitor can publicly see.
This route cannot enter a private or closed group. It also cannot show the list of people who reacted to a post, because a signed-out visitor sees only the reaction count. LeadScanner does not collect phone numbers, email addresses, member exports, or reaction lists. If you need contact lists, reaction data, or access to closed groups, public-content monitoring is not the right product.
How to monitor Facebook groups for keywords or intent
In keyword mode, you set your own phrases, such as “looking for a roofer” for a contractor in Phoenix or “need a bookkeeper” for a firm in Chicago. The system checks posts and comments read during a scan for those phrases. This works well when requests use repeatable language and the team already knows the words prospective customers tend to use.
AI mode scores buying intent from 0 to 100, explains the score, and drafts a reply in the post’s language and the customer’s voice. The score and reply draft are AI-mode features, not simple keyword matching. Notifications can be instant or digest-based and can go by email, Slack, SMS, or webhook, depending on the plan and campaign settings.
What you get with each Facebook group lead
A result takes you to a specific public post. It includes the author, text, link, and the reason the post matched your criteria. In AI mode, it also includes the intent score and a reply draft. That gives a sales coordinator the context to hand a relevant post to a rep, rather than asking them to scroll through several groups and work out what the request means.
This is not a contact database. You do not get a phone number, email address, member list, or a list of people who liked or reacted to a post. A public post may still contain personal data, so it must be handled under GDPR. History follows the retention period of your plan, and data is deleted on request. Legal details are available under /legal.
How often to monitor Facebook groups
The right frequency depends on how quickly an opportunity goes stale and how active the group is. A group with daily requests for plumbers in Dallas needs a different rhythm from a neighborhood hobby group with occasional posts. Do not estimate from member count alone. Look at the pace of new posts, when people publish, and how long a useful reply still has value.
Use the guide How often to scan Facebook groups as a starting point. Begin with a rhythm that matches activity in the source, then check whether the results are fresh and useful. Each campaign has its own offer profile, sources, notification rules, and time zone, so an agency can run a separate process for every client.
What Facebook group monitoring costs
Billing uses points, rather than a separate monthly charge for each group you follow. One scan of one source costs 1 point, and an AI-mode scan costs 2 points. There is no scope surcharge. Source limits still depend on the plan, so check the current pricing before adding a larger list of groups or pages.
If a scan fails on our side, the points are refunded. First, use the free check on the home page to see whether your own group is public and readable: paste in its link. Then start the free trial with no card required. That lets you test your sources and the relevance of results before changing your team’s process.
Facebook group monitoring reads public content without a login in chronological order and charges per scan, not by collecting contacts or entering closed groups.
Questions that come with it
Is Facebook group monitoring legal?
Reading content publicly visible to a signed-out visitor is not the same as bypassing a protection. Public posts may still be personal data, so you need a processing purpose, retention period, and a way to handle deletion requests. See the guide Is monitoring public Facebook groups legal? for the full explanation.
Do you need to be a group admin?
No. You do not need to be an administrator or member to monitor a public group with LeadScanner. Admin status is required for Facebook’s own keyword alerts, but not for reading content that Facebook shows to every signed-out visitor.
How often should you scan a group?
Scan according to how quickly new posts appear and how long a request remains useful. Active local groups usually need more frequent scans than groups with a few posts each week. The guide How often to scan Facebook groups explains how to choose a starting rhythm.
Does monitoring work for private Facebook groups?
No. LeadScanner reads only public groups and public pages available without signing in. It does not use a Facebook account, request membership, or bypass a login wall, so a private or closed group cannot be scanned.
